Here are honest notes from our first campaign: what we built, what surprised us, and what we would do differently.
Why We Ran Ads at All
The distribution problem is real for any new B2B offer. You can have an excellent product, but without a way to reach decision-makers, the product simply does not exist in the market. For Bulgarian SMBs, Facebook and Instagram remain the dominant digital channels — that is where owners and managers spend their attention outside work hours.
Our goal was not direct conversion. It was to learn whether our message resonated — and with whom.
What We Set Up
We launched an awareness campaign with a single ad set: interest-based targeting (e-commerce, automation, technology) plus behavioral signals (small business owners, online buyers). We tested two formats: static image with short copy and a short video with real voice-over.
The structure was intentionally simple. One campaign, one ad set, two creatives. We wanted to understand the platform's basic mechanics before adding complexity.
What Got Stuck — and Why
The real numbers from this campaign: 0 impressions. Not zero conversions — zero impressions. The ad entered "In Review" status and stayed there for over 8 days. The error in Ads Manager was Error 2643186 — no explanation, just a code.
After investigating, we found two causes:
- The
VOLUNTARY_VERIFICATIONtag — automatically added by the platform in EU context — triggers a special manual review queue for political advertising. Meta treats it as a signal that the ad may relate to a political entity. Result: manual review with no automatic approval and no clear timeline. - Our marketing app was in Developer Mode, not Published. Meta Pixel
1354507389862476was correctly installed and sending data — but the connected app had not been published. This blocked ads from running.
The fix: we deleted the old creative, built a new one (without the problematic tag), published the app, and completed Business Verification. The pixel setup and app publishing process worked — we just had to complete all the steps properly.
The lesson: before any EU campaign, verify your app status is Published (not Development), audit all tags on your ad set, and confirm you do not have VOLUNTARY_VERIFICATION — unless you are genuinely advertising a political entity.
The Andromeda Algorithm and Creative Diversity
Meta's Andromeda retrieval model changed auction logic. The system now scores how well a creative will hold the attention of a specific user — not just the bid. The practical result: more creative variations give the algorithm more signals to optimize against. A single creative hits a ceiling fast, even if it performs well.
More formats (static, video, carousel) and more message angles are not noise — they are fuel for the algorithm.
EU DMA and What It Means for BG Advertisers in 2026
The Digital Markets Act designates Meta as a gatekeeper, and European users now choose whether to share behavioral data with third parties. The result: interest-based targeting pools are smaller and less precise. Retargeting still works — but requires higher site traffic volume to be effective.
For small Bulgarian businesses, this means two things: your own audience (email list, page followers, site visitors) is more valuable than ever, and your cold-audience messaging must work without relying on precise behavioral targeting.
What We Would Do Differently
Raw video from day one
Short, authentic phone-recorded video outperforms polished static in attention and trust. Next time, we start with video.
Partnership ads
Meta's collaboration ad format lets brands amplify content from satisfied clients or partners. Social proof is built in — and trust is higher than a traditional ad.
Retarget before prospecting
Warm audiences convert better and cost less. Exhaust your retargeting pool before spending on cold audiences. The lesson: do not run a cold campaign while warm audiences remain untouched.
